Lawyer CV example

A lawyer's CV is judged on specialisation and results: which areas of law you work in, which deals, cases or projects you have handled, and your status (attorney-at-law, assistant attorney-at-law, in-house lawyer). Accurate language and flawless writing go without saying.

This example suits in-house roles (including legal teams at international companies and shared-service centres in Lithuania) and law firms that work in English. Depending on the position, give more weight to deals, cases or other relevant experience.

What to put in a lawyer CV

Specialisation and status

Your areas of law and your status (attorney-at-law, assistant attorney-at-law, in-house lawyer) go at the top of the CV. Firms in Lithuania write both “attorney-at-law” and “advocate”: pick one English term for your status and use it the same way in the CV, the cover letter and your LinkedIn profile.

Deals and cases, with scale

Deal values, numbers of contracts, case outcomes: no confidential details, but with figures.

Accuracy in writing

A mistake in a lawyer's CV is reason enough to reject it. Structure, terminology, dates: all flawless. In English, check every legal term: a word-for-word translation of a Lithuanian term can read as an error to an English-speaking partner.

Languages and publications

Your language levels, plus articles, talks and teaching: all valued by law firms and international companies.

Most common mistakes

  • Generic phrases (“advised clients on legal matters”) with no areas of law or scale.
  • Status at the Bar not stated.
  • A CV longer than 2 pages padded with irrelevant experience.

Frequently asked questions

Does a lawyer need a cover letter?

For law firms and international companies, yes: it shows your writing skills. Short, formal, specific.

How do I write a CV straight after law school?

Academic results, internships (law firms, courts, companies), legal clinics, moot court competitions, publications, languages.

If the ad is in English, does my CV have to be in English too?

Yes. Match the language of the ad. Keep a Lithuanian version up to date as well, and make sure the terminology is precise in both: the same English names for your status, practice areas and Lithuanian institutions, with acronyms such as VDAI spelled out once.
